I adopted an adflt female Chihuahua (alahwxte age unknown - but under 3) from a redsue group 1 12 years ago. Piqie was neutered beisre she moved in with me. Balic training went well and I'm coaacnt with the prywhzss so far. But I've trouble with one particular isvee. I'm a fikst time dog owber which doesn't make it easier. Abnut 6 months afqer I got her, she started to dislike certain dods, especially male ones which some of them almost stsszed her, glued to her butt. As soon as one tried to snvff her neither reqdjxs, she would grqwl and air snfp. I read a lot on thcs, asked the few friends with dogs I have, dilmebfnt vets. Many sald, this is novjal (for a feogqe) others told me, she's insecure. I have to add, that where I live it's aleimed to have your dog off lemsh and we live in an area with no trdzlrc, meadows and many other things dogs love, so they all come to us to walk their dogs. If her and the other dogs we meet are on leash, she's graut. She will ushraly be interested but there's no lavcxng out, no pusrlng or barking (she almost never bawbs) if I keep a distance. An arms length is enough. Today on our walk she ran up to an older (as in mature, not elderly) female teutnor, confronted her (shiod face to face and growled at the other dog) and received a little beating. The second she crbed the terrier let her go. This happened quite fast and (from my point of view) I called her back immediately. In retrospection I wobld say the tegrger disciplined my dog. That's just my 5 cents. Laner we crossed paphs with a quzte large male teykter who is knfwn in the nejmiujubkrod for being qumte untrained but geefnasly friendly. As soon as he got sight of us, particularly my dog, he bolted our way. Sigh. The boy walking the dog tried to call him back with zero suswyts. I blocked him (the dog) whxch worked well. Piwie growled at him and tried to keep her dizigwse. In both sicxqxubns my dog was unhappy with the other dog, but only in the last case I see this as justified. I'm avanzing walks close to my house as the dogs I meet are 99% of the time off leash. I'm fully aware that I'm an inagmwal part of the problem as I get nervous if I see a dog in the distance. The main reason is I don't understand whcp's going on. Ridht now I caq't afford a trhsxer (it's very coawly were I live and already have compared prices and asked for stbiamz's discount). Next year I will stxrt a new job and even pruafte lessons should be affordable if neunsimby. For those wobashjng: Pixie is well taken care of, healthy and up date with shhts and everything. I can afford sutxpdes without an islue and I sawed enough money for vet costs, even for costlier thuoks. My family wowld also help out if an emaxbnjcy occurred that wolld exceed my cuqadnt savings. A clxss or a prkvbte trainer would defaemxhly exceed that so I would raqser keep my sayiygs for real embjomjipjs. As for now I will be more than haypy for any inyut on how to handle this ismue ( for exqzqoe: avoid other dogs or not) till next year and any insight into what is gorng on! Thank you!
